I think we can all agree that one of the best ways to learn anything new is by cracking open a good book. There’s so much wine wisdom packed into pages just waiting for you to soak it all up. If you really want to understand what’s going on in your glass, a little reading goes a long way.
Whether you’re here to level up your wine game or you just love a cozy read with a glass of something tasty nearby, here are a few books I absolutely love and think you will too.
Wine Folly by Madeline Puckette and Justin Hammack
If you’re just starting out or want a super visual, easy-to-digest wine guide, Wine Folly is the one. This was the first wine book I ever bought, and it’s still one of my favorites. It breaks down wine varieties, tasting tips, food pairings, and more with clean graphics that actually make sense. Seriously, this book makes learning about wine feel fun.
Wine Bible by Karen MacNeil
This book is a beast, but in the best way. It’s thick, it’s thorough, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to get serious about wine. Karen MacNeil makes everything super approachable, and her voice is really fun to read. I even had a copy at work for quick references and another at home because I couldn’t be without it.
Wine. All the Time. by Marissa A. Ross
This book is hilarious and helpful, which is my favorite combo. Marissa makes wine feel chill and not at all intimidating. You’ll learn how to describe what you’re tasting, how to read a wine label without getting a headache, and how to throw a dinner party that doesn’t stress you out. Even Mindy Kaling loved it, and if it’s good enough for Mindy, it’s good enough for me.
Wine Girl by Victoria James
This one hit me hard in the best way. Victoria James shares her story as the youngest sommelier in the country, and it’s not just about wine but everything she went through working in a male-dominated industry. It’s raw, honest, and eye-opening. If you’re curious about what happens behind the scenes in restaurants and wine culture, this book is a must.
Women Winemakers: Personal Odysseys by Lucia Albino Gilbert and John C. Gilbert
This book highlights incredible women from all over the world who are making major waves in winemaking. Even if you’re not dreaming of becoming a winemaker, the stories are so inspiring. And fun fact I didn’t expect to learn: only 10% of winemaker roles in California are held by women. That number needs to grow, and books like this shine a light on why.
