I finally graduated from college after a long five years and my parents took me wine tasting in Paso Robles. This past week, I visited a winery called Eberle Winery.
When you first drive up to the winery, you’re greeted by a statue of a boar, a boar water fountain, and two cute poodles named Sangiovese and Barbera. The winery itself overlooks acres of beautiful grapevines. The view is breathtaking.
The winery looks small from the outside, but it is actually bigger on the inside. (Think of Doctor Who’s TARDIS). We were offered a cave tour upon our first glass of wine, which was a Cotes-du-Robles Blanc. The Cotes-du-Robles Blanc is 58% Grenache Blanc, 38% Roussanne, and 4% Viognier. Though it wasn’t my favorite out of the five or six wines I got to try, it was a wonderful way to kick off the tour.
When we got down to the cave, we learned that there were around 2,000 wine barrels down there (if I remember correctly). They keep the barrels in the cave for aging because it stays at 68 or 69 degrees all year long. Eberle Winery also has VIP wine tasting down in the caves which they offer for free if you become a member. There is also a banquet hall that can seat up to 80 people that they host events in including their most recent crab feast.
Our tour guide and wine server, Daniel*, was positive and it was obvious that he loved his job. He was knowledgeable on the cave tour and when serving wine, he definitely knew what he was talking about. As it turns out, we have the same favorite grapes, Barbera and Sangiovese. Daniel even let me try the special reserve of Barbera for club members only. It was GOOD.
I also tried the Chardonnay, Full Boar Red, Eberle Zinfandel, and the Cabernet Sauvignon. I also had some sips of the wines my grandparents were tasting as well. Out of everything I tried, the Full Boar Red and the Zinfandel were my favorites. The Full Boar Red is a blend of Zinfandel, Barbera, Syrah, and Sangiovese. I’ve never been a fan of Zinfandel or Syrah, but this wine surprised me. I was even more surprised when I tried the Zinfandel and actually liked it.
All in all, I really liked this winery. The staff were nice, the wine was very good, and I definitely think that this winery was worth the visit. If you’re thinking about touring some wineries in Paso Robles, put this one on your list.
