If you thought I could resist combining my lifelong love of Harry Potter with my undying devotion to wine, you were sorely mistaken. Every time I think about pairings, I don’t just think food and wine, I think wine and vibe. And what has more personality than the four corners of Hogwarts?
Let’s raise a glass to each house and pair them with a wine that matches their spirit, flaws and all.
Gryffindor + Pinot Noir
Yes, Gryffindors are brave, noble, and have major main character energy, but let’s be real, they also love attention. That’s why I wouldn’t give them a powerhouse red like you’d expect. No, they get Pinot Noir. Pinot’s a classic. It’s elegant, versatile, and plays well with others, just like a Gryffindor who’s learned how to share the spotlight (sometimes). It’s got enough backbone to stand up for what it believes in, but it’s not stomping in the door demanding a standing ovation.
Slytherin + Syrah
Ambitious, clever, maybe a little unhinged. Slytherins are not sipping something basic. They’re reaching for Syrah, which is brooding, bold, and a little misunderstood. Not all Syrahs are great (I said what I said), but the good ones are unforgettable and complex, just like the Slytherins we all secretly love. Bonus: Syrah takes time to open up, but when it does, it’s intense. Sound familiar?
Ravenclaw + Fumé Blanc
Ravenclaws are analytical, curious, and probably better at blind tasting than the rest of us combined. Their wine? Fumé Blanc. It keeps you guessing and makes you think—sometimes it tricks you into thinking it’s unoaked Chardonnay, sometimes Viognier, but it’s actually just an oaked Sauvignon Blanc doing its thing. It’s layered, cerebral, and more complicated than it lets on. Honestly, if anyone at Hogwarts passed the Intro Somm exam on their first try, it’d be a Ravenclaw.
Hufflepuff + Chardonnay
Hufflepuffs are sweet, reliable, and sneakily funny. They’re also the kind of people who throw the best dinner parties because they genuinely want everyone to have a good time. Their wine is Chardonnay—golden, cozy, and totally underappreciated until you remember just how much range it has. Oaked, unoaked, buttery, crisp… Chardonnay can do it all. Just like Hufflepuffs, it’s good in every season and pairs well with basically everything.
Drop your house in the comments and let me know if I nailed your wine pairing. Not sure where you belong? Head over to Wizarding World and find out. Just don’t be surprised if the Sorting Hat gets a little too real!
No joke, while reading Ravenclaw I was thinking “oh, that fumé blanc I had recently would be perfect” and then you said fumé blanc!!!
Oh my gosh, that’s crazy! I love that so much!
